Cavtat, Dalmatia Cavtat (;,, or simply Cavtat) is a town on the Adriatic coast in eastern Croatia, population of 10,171. It is situated north of Split in Dalmatia, Croatia, and is part of the Split-Dalmatia County. The town is situated on a steep slope facing the sea and surrounded by steep mountains and rocky coastal cliffs. It is dominated by the large church of St. Jovan in the centre of town. History The first Slavic settlement in the area was established in the 7th century, and became part of the Duklja Kingdom. In the 9th century the region was conquered by the Byzantine Empire. In 1102, the medieval county of Duklja was split into the bishopric of Nin and the county of Krbava. The first known settlement was founded in the 12th century on a small island in the bay, later the town grew to its current size with the addition of bay. With the fall of Duklja in 1297, the region came under the rule of the Republic of Venice. In 1355, the Venetian captain, Francesco Contarini, built a fortress on the site of the current town, and fortified the peninsula with two more fortresses, to defend the entrance to the town. The fortress soon became a key point of the Venetian defense against the Ottoman fleet in the Battle of Cavtat in 1417. In the early 17th century, the Catholic Church claimed ownership of the entire island of Ciovo and, according to the will of Pope Paul V, transferred ownership to the bishop of Nin. The bishop of Nin sold the property to Dubrovnik's state-owned trading company, the Perast Maritime Company. In 1667, the island was completely destroyed by the flooding of the nearby river Mirna. In the 18th century, the old town and fortress were destroyed by the Venetians and the site was cleared for a new town. The new town was laid out on the site of the old fortress by the Perast Maritime Company, which was later turned into a tobacco factory. The present town of Cavtat was officially established in 1730. In the 18th century, the town was connected to the mainland by the only road in Dalmatia, a centuries-old route known as Cres - Split road.
